You might be aware that CBD is a popular health product, but did you know that your pets can benefit from it, too?
Recent research shows that dogs in particular could benefit from CBD oil. How do CBD pet tinctures work?
As mammals, we all have something called an endocannabinoid system. Right now, as you read this, your endocannabinoid system is hard at work, trying to keep your body healthy and balanced.
The endocannabinoid system consists of cannabinoids and receptors. These receptors receive “messages” from the cannabinoids and affect the rest of the body, including the muscles, nervous system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, and even the skin.
As the name suggests, the endocannabinoid system is affected by cannabinoids. While some cannabinoids are produced by your body, others are produced in cannabis and hemp plants. One of the most well-known cannabinoids is cannabidiol — also known as CBD.
In short, CBD oil affects your pets because they, too, have an endocannabinoid system — just like humans!
Benefits of CBD pet products
What can you use CBD pet products for? So far, the research suggests that CBD for pets can help dogs with numerous health issues, from anxiety to pain and more.
Dogs can become more anxious because of loud noises like fireworks, a change in their home or environment, or physical health conditions. Some dogs are naturally more anxious than others, and many have specific triggers — like with separation anxiety
The good news is that CBD oil might be able to help with anxiety in dogs. CBD has long been used to soothe anxiety in humans, so it’s no surprise that it could help anxious dogs, too. One 2018 survey of US veterinarians showed that many veterinarians find CBD for pets to be an effective treatment for anxiety in dogs.
The connection between CBD and anxiety in dogs must be studied further before we fully understand it, but so far, the research is promising.
Allergic skin conditions
Itchy skin can be caused by food allergies (such as chicken) or external allergies (such as grass, pollen, or detergent). Licking and scratching a rash just makes it worse, and it could lead to infections.
Some research suggests that CBD for pets could help with allergic skin conditions in dogs. For example, a study conducted in 2012 looked at the effects of CBD for pets on different samples of canine skin with atopic dermatitis (an allergic skin condition). CBD seemed to reduce the inflammation and the severity of the rash.
For this reason, many owners give their pets a daily dose of CBD oil to soothe rashes.
It might surprise you to learn that CBD is often used to reduce epileptic seizures, especially in children. The FDA recently approved of a CBD-based drug called Epidiolex, which is prescribed for children with rare seizure conditions.
Many dogs suffer from epilepsy, with some breeds being more prone to seizures than others. The good news is that humans might not be the only ones who benefit from CBD’s anti-seizure properties. Interestingly, a 2017 study administered CBD oil to seizure-prone dogs. The study found that the dogs who had CBD for pets had fewer seizures than those who didn’t.
We advise you to speak to a veterinarian before medicating an epileptic dog with CBD. Since it is a very serious condition, it’s best to let a veterinarian guide you.
Dogs don’t always let us know when they’re in pain.
Nobody likes to see their four-legged friend in pain. Whether your dog has a chronic painful disorder, or is recovering from an injury, CBD for pets might be worth looking into.
A 2018 study looked at dogs with osteoarthritis. The researchers found that CBD oil reduced their pain and increased their mobility levels. In the 2018 survey of US veterinarians mentioned above, veterinarians suggested that CBD seemed to help dogs with painful conditions.
More recently, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2020 examined the effects of CBD oil on 20 dogs with osteoarthritis. The study involved administering CBD to dogs over a four-week period. CBD seemed to reduce pain in dogs with osteoarthritis, and it improved mobility.
How to use CBD oil for pets
How much CBD tincture should you give your dog? It depends on their weight.
Generally, you should give your dog between 1mg and 5mg for every ten pounds of their weight. Our CBD for pets tincture contains 9mg per milliliter (a full dropper). The bottle includes a marked glass dropper so that you can easily measure out the correct amount of CBD oil.
Start with a lower dosage (1mg per ten pounds) at first, and then gradually increase it if necessary. It’s best to record their symptoms each day and make a note of whether they seem better or not.
We recommend consulting with a veterinarian before giving your dog CBD, as they will be able to advise you on the dosage.
You can squeeze CBD oil directly into your dog’s mouth, or add it to their food. You can also add a little to wet food or a dog treat.
Is CBD For Pets safe?
CBD is generally safe for dogs, according to the available research. It’s also important to note that CBD oil can’t make your dog feel “high.” CBD is a non-intoxicating substance.
However, CBD for pets can sometimes cause side effects such as sleepiness or diarrhea. While not all dogs experience side effects, some do — so please monitor your dog’s behavior after giving them CBD.
To avoid any side effects of CBD, it’s best to talk to a CBD-friendly veterinarian before using it on your dog. Start with a low dosage and increase it gradually if needed. Using high-quality CBD for pets products from reputable companies is also important — your pet deserves the very best!
