As an athlete, you’re well aware of the strain your body goes through. Over time, the wear and tear your body endures can lead to injuries and pain. While you can manage these with RICE – rest, ice, compression, and elevation – and over-the-counter pain relievers, there is a more natural way.
Athletes are turning their attention to CBD oil, as a natural alternative to alleviate aches and pains in the body.
At Royal and Pure, we want to help everyone find the right product from them, including athletes. Let’s talk through everything you need to know about taking CBD oil to enhance your rest periods.
What is CBD oil?
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. These are plants often associated with marijuana, but CBD doesn’t contain THC – the primary psychoactive compound. It’s safe for both humans and animals to take.
CBD oil is made by extracting the oil from the seeds, flowers, and stalks of hemp plants. It’s the most potent form of CBD.

Why do athletes use CBD oil?
One important thing to note is that cannabinoids already exist in your body. Your endocannabinoid system (ECS) modulates the activity of neurons. While scientists are still researching to understand how this system works and how CBD influences it, it appears that the primary purpose of the ECS is maintaining homeostasis – the process all living things use to maintain stable conditions in order to survive.
Athletes typically apply greater stress to their bodies, which leads to pain and inflammation. Because the endocannabinoid system can’t handle this on its own, adding CBD can help your body maintain homeostasis.
Here are some of the benefits you may see if you begin using CBD as an athlete.
A natural alternative
Due to its anecdotal evidence of helping to alleviate pain, athletes have started to favor CBD to anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium.
Excessive inflammation can hinder your recovery affecting your performance. It’s thought that cannabinoids binding to CB2 receptors may have an anti-inflammatory effect as it reduces cytokine production. When CBD binds to the CB2 receptors, it helps to dial back the response your immune system has — i.e. inflamed tissues — after you’ve had a tough workout.
Improves sleep quality
If you have trouble going to sleep, CBD oil may be able to help. Athletes have reported having an easier time going to sleep after taking CBD and getting a more restful night.
